How did you first discover The Lakes?:
My love for the water began with swimming and lifeguarding lessons. Then I got into canoe camping, kayaking and dragonboat racing (I wanted to get out on the water in every way I could!) After taking my first stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) lesson right here in Toronto with SUPGirlz, SUP became my passion and favourite way to experience the water whether it's in the summer or winter.
I think it's amazing that Ontario, which translates to “sparkling” water from the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) word “kanadario” or "great lake" from the Huron (Wyandot) word, has over 250,000 freshwater lakes! As a librarian, I love researching and learning more about the places I paddle, and I am excited to discover more paddling places locally and beyond!
What inspires you about the LS community?:
Being surrounded by other water women with a shared sense of love for the water, who come from such different backgrounds, experiences, stories, paddling and surfing abilities, all while being supportive of each other is so incredibly inspiring. I love connecting with new people each year, helping each other get out more on the water and trading stories of our paddling adventures.
Favourite places to SUP?:
I have SO many fave places for different reasons but if I had to pick one, it would have to be the Toronto Islands. It's not only my home paddling spot, but I love how easy it is to escape the noise and bustle of the city just by going to the other side of the harbour. The Toronto Islands is super close to the city but it is a totally different world out there with it's serene environment (flat, calm waters in the meandering lagoon), so full of wildlife (birds chirping and whizzing around, painted turtles stare at you from nearby logs, giant fish pass stealthily under your board). And then there's that Toronto skyline view at sunset...
What scares you?:
I always try to overcome any fears I have but losing my dog Rex is something I'm dreading :-(
What do you love?:
Being on the water of course :P Other than that, sunrise, sunsets, nature, wildlife, new experiences, learning new things, my German Shepherds, winter, snow, snowboarding, laughing, libraries...yeah, I have a lot of love for a lot of things :-D Especially SUP but you probably already know that ;-)
Miss Vickie's Salt & Vinegar chips lol. Oh, and bourbon or blueberry teas after winter paddling.
