We give recognition and acknowledge that the places where we live, paddle, surf and gather throughout Southern Ontario are situated within the traditional and treaty territories of many Indigenous Peoples, including the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg, Mississauga Peoples, Haudenosaunee and Wendat.

In Durham Region, we are situated within the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Williams Treaties.

We acknowledge that the waters we paddle and surf, and the shorelines we enjoy have been cared for by Indigenous Peoples since time immemorial. May we approach them with gratitude, respect, and a commitment to learning from those who have stewarded these lands and waters long before us.

We continue to recognize that the effects of colonialism and genocide do not end with this Land Acknowledgement, and that much work remains to be done. When we gather and enjoy these lands and waters, may we consider our own responsibilities to reconciliation, to one another, and to the places we are fortunate enough to spend time in.

We invite everyone here to learn more, listen to Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and carry that learning beyond today.
